Games of Strategy

These games place a premium on strategy in order to achieve goals. Whether you’re playing virtual chess or developing your empire, using your brainpower to get to the finish of the game is encouraged.

This is another another subgenre-rich genre.

The fundamentals of the subgenre are “eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate,” hence these games are dubbed “4X.”

Civilization is a classic example of the subgenre, in which you start out as a few units, grow your cities and arsenals through time, and eventually kill rival players through battle, diplomacy, or technical advancement.

The Big Picture

It’s all about the big picture in these games. Many grand strategy games are based on historical events: examples include Europa Universalis and the Total War franchise. You must lead a nation or faction to victory by controlling the economy, technological development, and, of course, military force.

Real-time Planning

Real-time strategy games are built on accumulating resources and defeating your opponent. Standard games include Age of Empires and StarCraft.

The goal of the game is to gather enough resources to build up your weaponry and armies to crush your opponent.

MOBAs have grown in popularity as a result of the mod ‘DotA.’

You’re placed on a map with four corners, and your goal is to either outscore or destroy your opponent.

League of Legends, Smite, Heroes of the Storm, Defense of the Ancients, Arena of Valor, Heroes of Newerth, and Vainglory are just a few examples of MOBA games.
